It is the dirge of sports. Doubt has crept into the minds of the public. Sports fans may start to wonder why they should watch a game of cheaters…
When an athlete’s performance is exceptional, the immediate question is, “Are performance enhancing drugs the reason? How could they possibly perform so well? How could they break those unbreakable records, without the aid of PEDs?” So far the NBA has been the least tainted in the PED arena; still, changes are underway way.

It is in response to the current headlines about performance-enhancing drugs. Lance Armstrong rocked the world with his admission that winning seven Tour de France titles was made possible with drugs. As we know, he was stripped of his titles. But don’t “all” cyclist use steroids? Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis sped his return from a torn triceps muscle by administering deer antler spray. He received a ten game suspension for that. And former NLMVP Ryan Braun is under investigation by the MLB regarding his association with a clinic in Florida that is involved with PEDs. Obviously, these are just the first few ...
... names that popped into my head in the last nano-second… the list goes on and on.
The NFL and Major League Baseball have had rampant use of performance enhancing drugs among its players. Just look at the numbers in baseball’s top leaders by season:

It looks awfully suspicious to me. Could athletes today really be that much better than athletes 50 years ago? Is it conceivable that today’s players can hit that many more homeruns in a season than in 1932?
Currently NBA players get tested only four times during an entire season, and the fourth time can happen at any time from October to June. The testing could happen at the middle of the season, or even near the beginning. Guess what? After an NBA player has had his fourth test, its open season for cheating. And who wouldn’t, when there’s no chance of getting caught? Hey, be a hero! Make the fans go wild! Have your name go down in history! Get those multi-million dollar contracts!
Commissioner David Stern announced that plans to test NBA players for PEDs and HGH are underway and may begin as early as next season. More reliable tests for HGH will likely be incorporated into their testing procedures. He acknowledged that even though it has not been a big problem in the NBA, the league and player’s union chose to be proactive to assure the public as well as to warn the players that drugs will not be tolerated.
Every professional sports league must insist on multiple, random, state of the art, highly accurate testing of their athletes. The public should demand it.
