Though they may be similar, there are notable differences between a jiu jitsu kimono and a Brazilian jiu jitsu kimono. However both sports use rash guards for the, safety of competitors.


Both jiu jitsu and Brazilian jiu jitsu also use the same coloured belt ranks. Originally the founder of Judo, Kano Jigoro, used only white and black coloured belts to signify beginners and those who were filled with knowledge. Other colours were not used until 1935. The next level for bjj students as they move up in competition and continue to wear rash guards in gi fights is a brown belt and then finally a black belt. A brown belt requires an additional five years of training and a black belt is the highest common belt in bjj. A black belt denotes an expert level of understanding.


Known as a coral belt, a black and red belt means students earn the title of “master” and a red belt is the ultimate honour. A red belt means a bjj kimono wearer has earned the title of “grand master” and is the ninth and final degree of belt colour for bjj students.
