Shopping In Budapest, Hungary!

Budapest's reputation as a food capital of the world dates largely from the late 19th century and, bizarrely, to a certain degree from the chilly days of communism. Budapest is one of those iconic cities of the world which is famous for the majestic Great Synagogue. Budapest also straddles the river Danube with its beautiful historic bridges. The ornate thermal baths are also a must see if you plan to come to this lovely city.
Shopping
Buy gifts, try the delicious fresh vegetables and fruits, Hungarian paprika, tablecloths, etc. and gobble the Hungarian savory snack, ‘Langos’ in the Central Market Hall by the Liberty Bridge in Budapest.
There are good food stalls and an affordable restaurant too. To get unique gifts, or to shop for Hungarian artsy specialties go to WAMP Design Market or Gozsdu udvar in the old Jewish quarter. For handmade design textiles, scarves, etc.
Popular Gifts/Keepsakes from Budapest:
Tourist shops are crammed full of goods that Hungarians believe a visitor would most like to buy as a souvenir of their time in Budapest, namely porcelain (Herend and Zsolnay), embroidery, ...
... cut glass and crystal. We advise you to buy these items from the factory outlet if you can - this will avoid you having to pay the huge mark up that tourist shops put on the products.
Events
Within the Budapest Wine and Gastro Days (15th - 24th September 2006) 19 restaurants introduce the Hungarian cuisine and the country's finest wines to tourists.
The Budapest Autumn Festival (6th-20th October 2006) is the main cultural event in Budapest in autumn. The two-week festival is packed with contemporary art events and performances.
This year the Cultural Heritage Days (16th - 17th September 2006) focuse on the architecture of the social-realist era (1945-1960).
Music
Enjoy operas in the beautiful Hungarian Opera House (snacks in the break are also a treat) and/ or listen to classical concerts at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music or choirs, organ concerts at the magnificent St Stephen’s Basilica.
Culture
Budapest is an interesting city in that it was heavily damaged in WWII and its people have been behind the Iron Curtain until fairly recently. The city is thriving and the people are enjoying the influx of money from tourism. We found the Hungarian people to be somewhat guarded but friendly when we talked to them. They were very helpful when we asked for directions or recommendations on local restaurants. In fact, our best meals in Budapest were recommended by the locals.
Night Life
Budapest stag night and day is all about forgetting life's worries and cutting off the stressful life to get knee-deep into absolute joy and fun. Hence, if you think that you want to party hard and give your eyes a wonderful treat with the stupendous sites round Budapest then come in here to make it the most out of the whole trip.
