There are many conflicting ideas on which methods should be used to combat panic disorders and the panic attacks associated with them. Everyone has an opinion, be it medical professionals, psychologists, spiritual healers or just the average person. Only the individual who is suffering from the panic disorder and panic attacks will be able to ascertain which method of treatment would work best for them.

Firstly we will take a look at self-help. In most cases there are many ways in which a sufferer can take control of their symptoms. This will involve doing a lot of research into their condition. There are many books and websites out there offering free advice on how to extinguish those feelings of fear and panic. Sometimes it could involve taking a third-party perspective, and talking yourself through your feelings. Simply learning to tell yourself that you are safe, and taking control of your emotions, can go a long way in helping you. Of course, this manner of treatment is not effective for everyone. Sometimes the feelings experienced by a sufferer are too strong, and they may even feel too hopeless to believe they ...
... are able to combat their affliction on their own.

There are a range of therapies available for panic disorder sufferers. This can involve a psychologist, a hypnotherapist or even a spiritual healer. With this form of therapy, you will be talked and coached through your panic disorder symptoms. The therapist will give you 'tools' on coping with a panic attack. Sometimes the support and counseling from your therapist is effective enough for you to feel in control. You will have reassurance and comfort, and will be empowered through the knowledge that you are receiving 'help.' Even joining a support group can be immensely helpful, and will help eliminate the feelings of embarrassment and shame associated with panic disorders. You will realize that you are not the only one who is feeling this way, and will be inspired by the stories of other's success in overcoming panic symptoms.

There are other forms of alternative healing for panic disorders. Meditation is thought to promote relaxation and self-control, thereby reducing the symptoms of a panic disorder. There are other relaxing exercises and methods that can be executed by a sufferer. All of these promote relaxation and control of the mind and body. Some involve learning different breathing exercises, and techniques to relax the body. When the sufferer is involved with a situation that has the potential to trigger a panic attack, they will practice their breathing exercises or other method of relaxation. This may give them a newfound sense of control and optimism.

There is one last method of treatment for panic disorders, although this is perhaps the most controversial one. Sometimes a psychologist will prescribe anti-depressants or other prescription medication to ease the symptoms of panic disorders. The problem is that anti-depressants will trigger adrenalin in the body, mimicking the accelerated heartbeat and awareness that occurs when the sufferer experiences a panic attack. With sedatives that are sometimes prescribed, the sufferer will be slower, and will have difficulty concentrating. The sedatives may help the nerves, but will slow you down considerably. The biggest problem with prescription medication is that your body will get used to relying on the tablets. The best way to deal with your panic disorder is to learn how to cope on your own, without the assistance of medication.
