Nj Dental Implant Experts: The 7 Signs Of Gum Disease, Part 1

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, a shocking 80% of all Americans present with some form or stage of oral bacterial infection. That’s a significant percentage of the population and is testament to the fact that we are still being negligent of our oral health and hygiene! The two best approaches to dealing with the nasty oral ailments and diseases that cause tooth loss and the need for NJ dental implants are (1) prevention and (2) education.
In this two-part article series, we shall explain what the 7 signs and symptoms of gum disease are so that ignorance no longer keeps people from the treatment they need. Once we have provided an education, we shall explain what preventative measures people can practice to promote excellent oral health and prevent gum disease and tooth loss.
What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as gingivitis and periodontitis, is characterized as a serious and advanced bacterial infection of the gums surrounding the teeth. Often, by this stage, the bacteria have migrated deep down into the gingival sulci, forming hard to clean “pockets” between ...
... the tooth root and the gum wall. This frequently necessitates a deep cleaning or even gum surgery in order to eliminate.
Gum disease is the single most prevalent cause of tooth loss and the need for teeth replacement using, for example, NJ dental implant. In fact, it is responsible for the ±38 million edentulous (toothless) adults living in the United States. It is a very serious condition that is linked to a myriad of other potentially fatal health issues and diseases, such as diabetes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis and kidney problems.
The Symptoms of Gum Disease
One of the biggest problems with early gum disease is that the condition doesn’t tend to cause patients any acute pain or discomfort. In the absence of such symptoms, which would be hard to ignore, patients tend to avoid treatment, thinking that if they had a problem worth seeing the dentist about, it would hurt! This just isn’t the case.
The following list presents is the 7 signs and symptoms of gum disease. If you present with one or more of these symptoms, it is imperative that you book an appointment with your dentist or periodontist (gum specialist) immediately:
Gums that tear easily and bleed when brushing or eating crunchy foods.
Swollen, inflamed (red) gums.
Gums that have receded unnaturally from the crowns of the teeth, exposing the darker roots beneath.
Chronic bad breath that won’t go away when you brush – you may need to ask a friend or family member to be honest with you about this one.
Visible accumulations of tartar (a whitish or brownish, discolored cement-like substance) on the crowns and roots of your teeth and at the gum margins.
Brown mottling of your teeth and gums, especially at the gum margins and between the teeth.
Teeth that feel loose and ultimately, tooth loss.
Once again, if you present with any of these symptoms in any degree or combination, book an appointment with your dentist immediately. Prompt treatment will not only save more of your teeth from sustaining irreparable damage and decay, but the nature of the treatment needed will be less invasive, less traumatic and less expensive.
