Ever since humans have hunted they have had need of a sharp weapon to facilitate the kill. Initially they used sharpened rocks. Later on in around fifth millennium BC people developed daggers. But it was not until the third millennium BC when in the Bronze Age we had the technology to develop larger and stronger blades i.e. swords. A sword primarily has two main parts. The blade is the biggest and the most obvious part. It has a point at one end and is attached to the hilt on the other. Usually it carries two sharp edges. There are many different styles of blades like single edge, broad, tanto, reverse and curved.
The next part is the hilt. The hilt collectively refers to the guard, handle and the pommel. It is the part that is used to wield the sword and usually gives a sword its distinctive characteristics.
The guard is sort of a barrier between the blade and the handle. The guard serves primarily to protect the hand from slipping on to the blade and injuring the person wielding the sword. But it also has been used for ceremonial purposes. For example the legendary sword of King Solomon featured the Star of David ...
... on the hilt. Many royal swords featured priceless jewels and stones.
The handle is well quiet self explanatory. It is where the sword is gripped. Usually the handle is made out of a metal (mainly steel). To ensure a more secure and comfortable grip the handle is covered in some kind of cloth or animal skin. In the west and around the world this has usually been leather but in Japan they used Sting Ray skin sometimes
The pommel is the last part of the hilt (and the sword). It serves both a practical and ceremonial purpose. It is there to make sure that the sword does not slip out of the hand. It also helps to balance the sword for much easier and deadlier swings. Ceremonially it, like the guard can have jewels or symbols edged onto it.
Over the years swords have played a huge role in human warfare and by extension human history. Even today with all the latest weapons and technology, the story and fascination with swords continue. Legendary swords have been mentioned in our books and stories, like the sword of King Solomon, or the sword of King Arthur. And in contemporary times swords are featured in our art, movies, video games, books, stories and culture. Be it movies like Kill Bill, Highlanders, games like The Legend of Zelda, Halo or anime like Bleach and Naruto, it seems swords have penetrated our collective imaginations and are here to stay for the foreseeable future.
