Hardwood flooring, which can literally last hundreds of years if cared for properly, represents a real investment in the value of your San Diego home. But, if you want your flooring to go the distance and to look as new as the day you first installed it, there are some important dos and don’ts to be aware of. In the first installment of this two-part article series, we explained some important cleaning and maintenance tips, as well as things you should and shouldn’t do when moving furniture across a hardwood surface.

In this article, we shall take a look at the possible damage shoes, carpets and sunlight can do to hardwood flooring of your San Diego home.

Hardwood in San Diego: Shoes Dos and Don’ts

Hardwood is fairly hardy when it comes to foot traffic; however, there are certain abuses that it simply cannot endure.

Do: Check your shoes to ensure that the metal heel supports (especially in stiletto heels) have not become exposed. Also check the treads of your shoes to make sure that you haven’t picked up any dirt, gravel or stray ...
... nails as this can all cause terrible scratching of your beautiful hardwood floors.

Do: Remember that stiletto heels can dent and pockmark your hardwood flooring. It might be best to place a shoe rack at the entrance to your home and only put your heels on when you leave. Alternatively, place protective throw rugs and hall carpets down in places that receive a lot of foot traffic.

Do: Watch your step when walking around your house in socks, especially on polished hardwood stairs. An accumulation of dust can make your flooring very slippery.

Hardwood Flooring in Carlsbad: Area Mats and Rugs Dos and Don’ts

Rugs and area carpets make an excellent aesthetic addition to hardwood flooring. They also serve to protect it, especially in areas of the home that see a lot of foot traffic or furniture movement, such as your hallways and in the dining room. However, you must be aware of the following:

Don’t: Leave wet or even mildly damp rugs and carpets lie on your hardwood flooring. If you’ve just given them a wash, make sure they have thoroughly dried before spreading them back out over your wooden floors. Water damages, stains and warps hardwood.

Do: Use runner carpets, mats and throw rugs to stop spills and trap dirt and grit tracked in by people wearing shoes. Make sure you clean them regularly.

Do: Check the backing of your throw rugs and carpets. Certain vinyl and rubber backings can actually affect the finish of hardwood flooring in San Diego, causing it to discolor and dull.

Hardwood in Carlsbad: Dos and Don’ts for Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can, over time, do substantial damage to your hardwood flooring, as you can see in the picture above.

Do: Make use of blinds, curtains, sheer drapes and throw rugs to protect your flooring from sun bleaching. Be sure to periodically move any rugs or area carpets around to prevent bleaching from creating an ununiformed appearance in your hardwood flooring’s finishing.

By following the tips laid out in this two-part article series, you can keep the hardwood flooring in your San Diego flooring looking as beautiful and new as the first day you had it installed!
