Types Of Printing Methods
Often it can be difficult to determine what to order from your printing company. With so many types of printing options, consumers often find it confusing to choose a method the suits them most. This article briefly discusses types of printing and provides some understanding on each of them.
In many cases, an important indicator of a reliable printing service is good reputations in the industry. Representatives from the company should be able to provide sound advices on details related to your project. Nevertheless, it’s important to understand basics related to printing tasks before assigning an order:
• Digital Printing: It is a relatively new form of printing and considered to be highly effective. Digital printing eliminates the needs of plates and printers simply need to send digital files directly to the press. Compared to earlier printing methods, digital printing is fast and it’s usually a preferred method for dealing with time constraints and meeting deadlines.
• Electrostatic Printing: Electrostatic printing has many similarities with photocopying. Colors stick to the drum and they are fused ...
... to paper by heat. Latest electrostatic printing equipments can accept digital files, which are useful for short printing runs.
• Offset Lithography: Offset lithography is probably the most popular printing method. It allows for limited set up time and economical use of ink. With offset lithography process, ink is offset from metal plate and objects are printed to the paper.
• Letterpress: Letterpress is among the earliest printing methods and it was developed in 15th century by Gutenberg. The method can be painstakingly slow as printers first need to develop relief. Like a rubber stamp, printed images are raised slightly from the plate surface. Very few printing services are still using this method, as far more advanced technologies are taking over the industry.
• Screen Printing: When using this method, printers force ink through the silk force. Screen printing is more appropriate when using non-paper materials such as mugs and T-shirt. Signage and large billboards can also be produced effectively with screen printing.
• Reprographics: Reprographics are generally used to duplicate and copy existing printed products. Most printing service offer reprographics technique, which allow you to make duplicates of existing hard-copy documents.
• Engraving: Typically used for expensive or fine stationery, engraving is used to make indented objects on printed materials.
• Thermography: Thermography is a process of making raised images by using a special type of powder that stick to wet ink. When heat is applied, the ink and the powder will fuse and form raised surfaces on printed materials. This method is generally useful for stationery.
• Gravure Printing: Gravure printing is an expensive method used to produce high-quality products in large quantity, such as catalogues , newspapers, magazines and others.
• Flexography: Flexography is typically used for packaging. It uses a rubber plate with raised relief. Because rubber is flexible, printers can use many types of items such as bottles, plastic bags, mugs and many others.
When hiring a printing services company, ask the representative about the best method for your project.
