Chronic versus regular constipation is like insomnia versus one night where you have problems sleeping. Constipation is a one-time problem that occurs for one week or less. Some suffer from constipation more regularly, which is when chronic constipation comes into play. The problem is also referred to as severe constipation. You do not have to worry about constipation becoming a regular problem, unless you discover that you battle the problem for several months at a time, or if you notice yourself suffering from constipation several times within a year.

The Symptoms of Chronic Constipation

Before you decide if you have chronic constipation, you should decide if you have the following symptoms of regular constipation.

• Difficulty using the bathroom
• Pain when having a bowel movement
• Cramps when you do not have a bowel movement
• Bloating around the stomach
• Excessive flatulence or gas
• Pain when trying to pass stool
• Thick or hard stool
• Blood in your feces

You must suffer from more than one of these symptoms for one week or longer for ...
... a diagnosis of constipation. You must also experience only two bowel movements or fewer bowel movements over that week. The chronic version of the condition must occur for a minimum of three months.

Getting Chronic Constipation Relief

Get relief from your chronic constipation with laxatives. Laxatives do not work for all individuals, including those that used too many laxatives in the past. If you notice that your stool has a hard texture and feels painful, then choose a stool softener. The stool softeners decrease the mass of the stool and soften the feces. This soft feces is much easier to pass through your body than the harder stool. Click for more information.

Other Remedies

One of the more common remedies for constipation is a body detox. During the detox, you change your method of eating by eating less food and drinking more liquids. Some refer to the process as a colonic colon cleanse because it benefits the colon more than any other body part. The only way to alleviate chronic constipation in adults is by keeping yourself regular. After you finish the detox, start introducing more fiber into your diet. Whether you opt for fiber supplements or eat more fiber-rich foods, you improve your colon health and see less problems with constipation. The detox is just the first step in improving your health.

When you follow a detoxification diet, you give your body access to better and healthier foods. The best foods for detoxification include those with a high moisture content and fiber,” says Litke.
