With the New Year the speculations that how the Malaysian property market will do this year have already started coming up. Just one major topic in discussion currently is the increase in the real property gains tax (RPGT), which has been announced among the primary changes for budget 2013. The government believes that doing this will help in dealing with the rising property prices, but how true does this really apply seems an unanswered question. It’s been seen that people who buy newly launched properties usually sell the same within a period of two years or the time by which the construction is completed. The government in Malaysia is doing every bit to ensure that the prices of essential items remain under control. But, what about the commodity which is crucial to live, a home, the government is not taking any serious step to help people here get affordable housing options. Just to ensure that something substantial can be actually done in this regard, the government has initiated this tax change.
One group that was most relieved hearing that the RPGT tax has not been revised by a larger amount is the developers. The hype that drastic increase would be materialized has now gone cold and the actual price surge has been much lower than anticipated. Some experts even commented that living with the new RPGT would not be that tough, just a little adjustment would be needed.
