Is Sania Mirza Over-rated?
There are always more than way to look at things; be it a problem; be it an object; be it a living, breathing being. Nothing in the universe has ever been the receptacle of singularly expressed point of view. The same applies for celebrities; to be more precise, Sania Mirza. India is truly diversified when it comes to its foremost female tennis champion. While some claim that she is a hardworking, highly successful and beautiful phenom, others are quick to dismiss her as over-rated.
Successful or overrated, Sania is indeed a phenomenon that gripped the nation and took over the commercial aspect of the industry, within a few years from its conception. Granted, Sania Mirza profile is nothing less than impressive. She is a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna award. After turning professional in 2003, her first victory was at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships Girls' Doubles title. The same year, she helped India pick up 4 gold medals at the Afro-Asian games held in Hyderabad. Following a really successful season during 2005, Sania was adjudged the WTA Newcomer of the Year. The following year, she picked up three more medals ...
... at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Her next significant win was at the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships. She also became the first Indian to win a Grand Slam title when she won the Australian Open – Mixed Doubles Event in 2009.
It was around this time that she started slipping. Her form became worse for wear and the name Sania soon became an empty promise. While some stood steadfast in their belief in the tennis player, others soon shifted base to ‘another’ upcoming and scrappy badminton player. Between photo shoots for a plethora of celebrity magazines and a broken engagement to a childhood sweetheart, Sania’s priority towards her true calling became adulterated. It might have been the mounting tensions of a very public, personal life or the collective pressures to stay atop her professional one, that might have did her in eventually.
In spite of her short comings, she has a fan base that touches the one billion mark. And amidst all criticism, her powerful forehand strokes will always set her a class apart from the rest of the female tennis stars. As far as India is concerned, it is not just Sania Mirza statistics that make her a crowd favourite; it is also her positive attitude and school girl charm.
