The Great Benefits Of Using A Turf Management Aerator
Whether you grow turf for sale or have commercial premises such as a golf course where healthy turf is necessary, you will need to take steps to ensure your turf grows well at all times. However, growth can often be stunted due to climatic conditions or due to compaction from dry times or usage. This is when you should use a turf management aerator.
An aerator is basically a machine with long spikes that drive into the ground, breaking up compaction allowing water and fertilizer to penetrate deeply into the ground where those turf roots are. Once the water and fertilizer are able to penetrate deeply into the soil, the roots of the turf will grow down deep also.
Most people who grow things know that deep roots are what keeps their plants healthy and guards against dry times. Shallow roots dry out quickly and the plant then wilts and can easily die. A plant that is under such stress is far more prone to disease than a healthy plant. If the soil is allowed to remain compacted, water will not penetrate to deep levels and neither will any roots.
Going over your turf with an ...
... aerator will usually make a difference that is visible within a few days. Roots will go down deeper and be nourished with all the moisture and fertilizer that can now get down there. And the top growth will be off and growing at an amazing rate in no time. In fact, using an aerator is the only way that this can be achieved.
If you plowed up your ground you would actually destroy what was growing there and have to replant it. It would be like starting from scratch again. And eventually, the soil would become compacted once again due to constant use or to hot, dry weather and even due to the roots of your plants matting just under the surface. So plowing is not the answer to compacted soil.
When the soil is aerated, those spikes penetrate the hard, dry soil to a depth of 25cm or more, depending on what kind of aerator is used. This provides lots of deep space for the turf roots to penetrate and access the nutrients that are down there. It makes far better use of the soil than if you were just using the top few centimeters. So if your turf is starting to look tatty, think about using a turf management aerator to improve the soil and give a boost to those roots.
