Various Aspects Of Golf Course Maintenance

There is a great deal of work involved in correct golf course maintenance. When golfers walk across that green velvet lawn with their golf clubs and balls they usually don’t think as much about the green as they do about their next hit and their scores. However, anyone that works to keep a green in top shape knows there is much more to a good green than just turning on sprinklers or mowing, as important as those two steps are.

For a start, you need to have a good base on which to grow that turf so that it is strong and healthy and disease will not be a problem. The base must contain the right nutrients and be of a composition that allows the turf roots to penetrate deeply for the best result. Sometimes soil becomes compacted due to use or due to climatic conditions. This is when using an aerator is necessary so the water, fertilizer and roots can penetrate more deeply.

Roots sometimes get tangled and matted just a few centimeters from the top of the soil. This means that they dry out quickly and the plants never get their proper share of nutrients. Rather, the top wilts and dies, forming ...
... patches of thatch on the top that actually prevents moisture penetrating. An aerator will help to prevent this problem and remove the thatch as well as breaking up the soil so that the roots can go down deep.

A brush needs to be used to sweep in sand and rubber granules and to straighten the turf blades so golf balls can run along straight to their destination. And of course there are all the paths that have to be kept clean and free from dirt and snow and other debris that is blown over them and the course during a storm or a windy day.

The edges also have to be kept neat and free of runners or seeding stalks of grass or weeds. If the edges are not kept neat and tidy then it soon impacts on the paths and the rest of the golf course, making it more difficult to keep them looking smooth and beautiful.

Of course, not every part of the course will be as smooth as a carpet; there is the rough that also has to be attended to with slashing so that golfers can actually find their balls and hit them out again. Even the rough cannot be totally left to nature. But once you have the right equipment, golf course maintenance will be a lot easier.
