Lakshadweep means 'A hundred thousand islands'. Lakshadweep, the smallest Union Territory governed by India, was annexed to India during the States Reorganization Act.


About Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep houses the only group of corals in India. Kavaratti Island is the capital of Lakshadweep and Malayalam, Mahl and English are the official languages. Lakshadweep has 17 uninhabited islands, 10 inhabited islands and 5 reefs that have submerged.


Where Is Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is located 400 kilometers from the west coast of India near Kerala on the Arabian Sea. Lakshadweep is an archipelago that belongs to the same island chain as the Maldives.

Places to Visit

Lakshadweep has been a major tourist attraction for people in the Indian Peninsula since mid-1970s. The small area covered by Lakshadweep is not feasible to set up industries. The government is now promoting the Kadmat and Bangaram Islands as tourism destinations to generate revenue for the place.
Kavaratti Island is the administrative capital and the main city in Lakshadweep. Agatti Island, located 460 km from Cochin, is the entry to Lakshadweep. The island is stretches to about 6 sq km. Beaches in Agatti Island are considered to be one of the best places in the world to swim. Fishing is the main livelihood for the islanders here. The tuna pickle prepared here is of export quality.


Bangaram, a small Island north of Agatti Island, is a prominent destination for International Tourism. The rich collection of fauna in the areas surrounding the island is a treat to the eyes. Adventure sports like snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing, canoeing, night watching and yachting are promoted vigorously to increase tourist frequency in the region. The palm groves in Bangaram are captivating.
The lagoon located to the west of Kadmath Island is a popular destination flocked by tourists. The Light house and the Maritime museum are also regular tourist attractions in Lakshadweep.


How to Reach

Air: The Agatti Airport has flights plying to Kochi and Ernakulam. Tourists traveling to international destinations can reach the Kochi airport or Mumbai airport, which have regular flights to major cities around the world. During monsoons, helicopters can be rented to travel from on island to another.


Road: Once inside Lakshadweep, you can either walk to the destination you want to or hire bicycles and reach the place. The roads do not connect all the islands.


Sea: Ferries can be hired at Kochi to reach Kavaratti Island. Boats and ferries can also be used to travel between one island and another inside Lakshadweep.
