You may have seen the movie, "The Bodyguard," starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner and thought that it was a nice love story! But have you ever considered having a bodyguard in real life? To the average person, the idea may seem a bit ridiculous. But there are instances in which having a bodyguard could be necessary.

Why would a person want a bodyguard? The obvious, easy answer is to protect one's safety. If you want to be sure that no one will hurt you, especially when you are in public, a bodyguard would be great! But for the average person, this is a bit unnecessary. You could just have a boyfriend or girlfriend who is a strong person to keep you safe and stay at your side.

Personal safety, however, is more of an issue when you have more of a public profile. For example, suppose you are a high government official, such as a senator or mayor. Having bodyguards, especially when you make public appearances (but even when you are out and about and could be recognized) is a bona fide consideration.

Another instance is if you are a celebrity or are on the verge. If you are an actor, model, ...
... singer, or something of that nature, your picture is plastered all over in your advertising, on billboards, television, and in print (magazines, newspapers, and so on). This makes it very easy to be recognized when you are out and about.

If you are choosing a career that is very public, having a bodyguard (at least part of the time) is an absolute must. But should you have one at all times? That is the next question!

Someone like Madonna, for example, who is world-renowned, needs a bodyguard, pretty much at all times. Even when she is at home or making a casual trip to the store, you can imagine she does not go alone. There is most likely a bodyguard at her side whenever she leaves her home. And she probably wears a disguise to keep from being mobbed by the crowds everywhere she goes.

But chances are, if you're reading this, you are not quite as famous as Madonna. By the time you reach that level of fame, you probably have managers and agents who give you all kinds of advice on self-protection. You may, however, be a news anchor or someone of that level of stature. In that case, there are instances where you’d want to consider having a body guard.

The main thing is to keep the expense of self-protection to a minimum. There are agencies and companies that can help you get what you need on your budget, without having to commit to having a bodyguard 24/7. How often you'll need one is going to depend on several factors. One of those factors is how often you currently are getting recognized when you are out and about.

Even if you are not famous at all, you may want a bodyguard if you feel threatened by an ex or someone else. Simply getting a personal protection order does not technically stop a person from choosing to find you and bother you (or even attack you!). This is another situation where a bodyguard would come in very handy!
