George Cook invented mechanical seal years ago. At that time it was named as ‘Cook Seal’. Earlier it was used for the compressors of refrigerators. But within a very little span of time it has become very famous in industrial works. Today it has a great value in the mechanical industry and that is why it is high in demand.

A mechanical seal is adjusted in any rotating machine, which includes compressors and pumps etc. The mechanical seal is used to prevent any leak between a rotating tube and stationary pump casting. This helps more than the mechanical packing due to its special specifications.

A mechanical seal is actually an equipment works with four elements, a drive of functions, a primary sealing surface and secondary sealing surface. The most important part of the appliance is the primary sealing surface, which is a combination of two rings adjusted in a hard material of like silicon carbide and a soft material of carbon.

All the stuffs need to be chosen on the basis of chemical chattels, pressure and temperature. There are various types of seals available. ...
... But it depends where and what kind of project one is going to work on. In most of the cases one can use hydraulically balanced seal. These types of seals generally make less heat. These are capable of handling a vast range of pressure during its use. Depending upon the pressure of the machine during the usage one must purchase the best seal as per the pressure. If the machine releases 400 pounds per square inch, then one must choose a special version of balanced seal.

For misaligned machines, a stationary mechanical seal would be the best seal. A pump with a driver or stuffing box, which is not adjusted properly into the rotating shaft, would be the best example for this. A stationary seal is beneficial for a pump works with a great speed. For the projects involves a work with high temperature then one must use seals with metal bellows. It is also good for the machines, which work in extreme cold. For Two-way system machines dual mechanical seals are the best choice. It also works as spare gaskets especially in the case of emergency like sudden power cut.

Some mechanical seals are there which are in use to connect non-metallic material like Plastic, Teflon, carbon and other things. These are basically used out of the parts, which are connecting. They might be liquids or gases. These are easily available in market.
