When businesses buy trophies as part of an employee recognition program, it's a cost effective way to motivate employees and reinforce the expected level of performance you expect from your employees. And it's exactly that level of performance that benefits your business, resulting in outcomes that you want to encourage in all employees. To illustrate, a reward program might be based on when specific sales mileposts are reached, and which time the employees are presented with nicely engraved awards. A business gets a visible reinforcement for other employees to follow, the employees feel like that are making real contributions to the success of the business, and their hard work is not only rewarded, but appreciated. And all the business had to do was buy trophies.

Ultimately, when you institute you employee recognition program, you want it to immediately be seen as a program that is good for the business, and one that legitimately motivates employees to reach the same high standards. To look at it another way, you want employees to feel the program is a good thing, and encourage feelings of camaraderie among ...
... workers and dedication to the company. The trophy is a token representing a much larger philosophy.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when developing an employee recognition program.

Before you run out and buy trophies, set clear benchmarks and criteria for what gets rewarded.
Make all employees eligible to win the award, not just one group or subsection. If you buy trophies, then all employees should have the chance to get one.
Commit to paper the exact details of the employee recognition program. It must describe in detail exactly what qualifies an employee for an award, just so there's no misunderstanding.
Give the award to any employee who qualifies to receive it.
Don't let too much time lapse between when the employee qualifies for an award and the trophy is awarded. The more distance between the two, the less the award reinforces the concept.
