Basically speaking, Web 2.0 refers to your website design. Though Web 2.0 gained popularity in 2004, the style has been around since the World Wide Web itself. Original websites were simple and easy to understand. As the Internet developed, people started to create website with multiple columns and images.

By 2004, the industry realized jam-packed websites were too confusing and complicated for people to use and understand. Web 2.0 web design brings the online world back to the simplicity of yesterday with cleaner lines and easy-going layouts.

A Web 2.0 site is recognized by its simplistic design. Instead of a page filled with information and columns, a Web 2.0 site has a central layout with fewer columns. Usually Web 2.0 sites only have two or three columns. The top section is separate so the website name, company information and bold logos are easily located and recognizable. Solid areas of screen real estate define areas with text, links, articles and video rather than merging them all together.

A Web 2.0 site is easily navigable. Links to other sections, articles, blogs and websites are simple to find. ...
... If users have to search around for what they need, they are likely to move on to a more navigable website design. Much like a store or office, people like to know where they are going when they enter your website.

Another characteristic of Web 2.0 sites is bigger text. Rather than squinting to read the fine print, all entries are legible so everyone can read the text. Introductions are printed in bold text so website visitors can effortlessly go from one entry to the next.

Graphics, photographs, surfaces, icons and flashes all add visual interest to a Web 2.0 site. Strong colors draw the eye to pertinent portions of the website. Flashes, icons, reflections and surfaces make users want to click to find out more information about what you have to offer.

The purpose of Web 2.0 design is to make your online real estate more accessible. Instead of distracting users with too much information, you are attracting them with alluring links that are simple to find. The icons, flashes and reflects draw the visitor's eye right to the areas you want them to see. The result is improved communication between you and your website visitors. Better communication means improved results and increased profits.

Even if you feel unsure about the process, there are website templates and professional website design options to help you. If your website design isn't talking to your visitors, it's time to revamp it with Web 2.0.
