Whole food stores are the leading retailer of organic and natural food worldwide, thanks to its consumers’ perception that natural and organic food is healthier than the non-organic one. These stores deal in organic food, vitamin supplement, natural baby formulas, homeopathic and herbal remedies and health beverages.

Whole food store are retailers that mainly sell natural health/wellness products or commodities to the public. These stores can either be community owned, organic markets or co-operatives, but majority of them are independent stores or chains, situated in urban high streets.

Majority of these stores usually work with local gardeners and farmers so as to provide their clients with locally sourced food. These food stores normally have a strong stand against supplying their clients with products that contain Genetically Modified Organics, growth hormones, artificial sweeteners, MSG, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, binders, herbicides, and other poisons that may compromise taste and also nutritional value.

The owners of these health stores usually tend to hire staff that already have knowledge ...
... of the products that the food store sells or have interest in the same products. Moreover, the employees have to undergo a training course or procedure that is accompanied by an exam on topics related to natural health before they qualify as permanent workers. Most food stores, especially those found in North America are not only self independent but are also family owned, hence they tend to open for long hours. Sometimes you can find a food store open from 8am to 8pm throughout the week, only closed during national holidays. Whole food stores are the leading retailer of organic and natural food worldwide, thanks to its consumers who have a perception that natural and organic food is healthier than the non-organic one.

Products Sold at the Whole Food Store

The type, quality and quantity of products sold at a health store depend mainly on the size and ambitions of a business in question. A small food store situated in a dense, busy area is unlikely to contain a similar number of departments like a sprawling, multi-layered business in a rural area which has a big space and finances to expand at its will. Despite the above factors, most of these stores tend to sell same products to varying quantities. For instance, it is rare to find a health store which does not sell at least one of the following products; organic food, vitamin supplement, natural baby formulas, homeopathic and herbal remedies, health beverages such as fruit juices and many others, kitchen utensils, frozen and refrigerated goods, natural laxatives, lactose free milk or milk substitutes, etc. Some of the biggest stores also have specialist departments such as bakeries, groceries, delis, meat and seafood among others. In these large stores, you will find at least one specialized member of staff in each department.

Regulations in the whole food store

Whole food store is subjected to several laws and regulations that relate to food labeling, health and sanitation. Federal regulatory agencies like Food and Drug Administration, Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and United State Department of Agriculture have come up with tight standards for the manufacture, processing, packaging, and marketing of organic products. If a food store fails to meet these standards, it will lead to confiscation of sales and marketing licenses.
