The Benefits Of Traveling During Offseason Periods

No matter which destination you want to travel to, you can be sure that destination has an "offseason" period. Sometimes it's a stormy period that ruins the attractiveness of the destination - say, a rainy season in Rio. However, most "offseasons" are simply times of year when mass floods of tourists cannot or will not go somewhere - say, non-summer months in the Outer Banks. And here's a dirty little secret travel agents don't want you to know about. "Offseasons" are not a bad thing! In fact, 9 out of 10 people can vacation somewhere during its so-called "offseason" and still have a great time. Here are a few reasons why:

1) It's cheaper to fly, stay, and live somewhere during its offseason period

The reason it's expensive to fly, stay, and live somewhere during the summer months is because many other people are trying to do the same thing. Demand rises, supply falls, and prices go up; it's economics 101. However, supply and demand works both ways. When massive hoards of people are not trying to fly, stay, and live somewhere, it's far cheaper for the relatively few people who still do! And it's not just cheaper ...
... airfares. In general, you will find that it's cheaper to get hotel rooms, stock up on food, and fill up on gas during offseason months.

2) The destination itself is just as fun

The only thing that's different about the offseason period is that fewer businesses and tourist traps are open. However, this shouldn't matter if you're going to a scenic or historic destiation. Take Ireland, for instance. The Cliffs of Moher look just as majestic and beautiful whether 5,000 people are there or 500 people are there. Ditto for the ancient cities of Greece, or the calm waves of the Outer Banks. So the ultimate question becomes: are you going somewhere for the location, or the crazy, tourist-infested mania?

3) Lack of tourists can actually make the destination better

It's an amazing paradox how tourists look down on other tourists - for being tourists! But the fact remains: no one likes being at a beach where you can't even spread out without hitting someone else's towel, or drive into town without hours-long congestion, or battle for a seat at a restaurant. And yet, millions of people flock to the same places at the same peak times, year in and year out. Don't follow the crowd! In addition to saving money and having more of the destination to yourself, you will feel less stressful and anxious by not being surrounded by screaming, impatient crowds of tourists.

4) It's easier to get the time off work

Most employers are inundated with time-off requests during spring break and the summer and holiday months. As noted, these are the "peak" or "in-season" times at many popular destinations. Luckily, another benefit of traveling during offseason times is not many people are requesting time off of work. You will be one of relatively few people asking for a week off in say, February, or October, as opposed to the thousands who ask for time off in July and December.
