Mount Pantokrator is more than 1,000 meters high and it is located on the northern part of the island. The upper part of the mountain is quite steep are receives snowfall during winter some times. Another unusual place is Old Perithia: this is a deserted village located beside the main road that connects Kassiopi and Acharavi. The village is located high up. It is very surprising as well as mystifying to come across a deserted village while exploring the mountains in Corfu. There are only few taverns in Old (Palea) Perithia where you can find genuine Greek food. Walking around the village and learning about the lifestyle of the people who used to stay there can be a great experience indeed.
Perithia traces its root back in the 14th century. The village grew rapidly with eight churches, one school, one police station and even a court. Close to 1,500 people lived in the village. As tourism developed, people evacuated the village and moved to the coastal area. From 1975, most of the villagers left their homes and moved down the hill close to the coastal area.
