Indian Metros – Challenges & Impacts

In the current scenario, Indian Metro cities are facing huge challenges largely impacted by rapidly expanding population and speedy industrialization. However amidst the rapid industrialization and consecutive population expansion, the process of planned urbanization of Indian metros has been relatively very slow. While primary of challenges concerning Indian metros relate to lack of adequate infrastructural facilities, wide of the mark city expansion, inadequate resource utilization and a whole array of associated problems.
According to census of India (a Govt. of India survey), there are total 4,378 agglomerations and towns in India. The key Indian metropolitan cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune, have a major chunk of city population living in slums. It is estimated that nation’s capital New Delhi has nearly 19 per cent of its people living in slum areas. Mumbai tops the percentage ratio of people living in slums with a soaring 55 per cent of entire city’s population living in slums. According to a recent survey conducted in the Indian Metro cities, it is estimated that nearly 70 per cent ...
... Indian recruitments will take place only in Indian cities and as a result there would no space left for people to own decent accommodations in the city. According to the survey findings, by the year 2030, nearly 600 million people would live in slums in India.
The rapid industrialization of Indian metros has directly impacted its land price. Being the commercial & financial capital of India, property in Mumbai is today available only at unapproachable prices. It is due to very heavy demand and limited supply, the Mumbai real estate market is booming at very high speed. The property prices (for Mumbai properties for sale residential as well as commercial) are so high that a common middle class man’s dream of owning a decent accommodation has become totally unapproachable.
Erroneous government policies, short sightedness and poor city planning are some of the common reasons behind darkened face of the Indian metros. The situation is so worse that most of the industries are shifting their industrial and operational zones to a whole bunch of Tire II cities in India. Industrialization gear across Gujarat, West Bengal and Orissa are some of the classic examples how due to constraint of space and lack of human resources industries have to move their base to lesser preferred destinations. Unplanned city expansion has badly impacted its current infrastructure as well. Road accidents and fatalities caused due to road accidents are one of the major public health concerns that metropolitan cities face today. If the census is to be believed, it is estimated that Indian citizens have greater scare from bad traffic than cancer, heart attack or any other major disease.
At one at when urbanization and industrialization is necessary for state and country’s economic growth, strained infrastructure and erroneous planning and worsening the situation. The situation requires smarter planning to deal with the challenges and make best of the available opportunities that Indian metro cities face today. The government and politicians must come up with detailed planning to improvise city infrastructure and other amenities such as hospitals, medical facilities and schools for the rapidly expanding city population.
