The waterfront capital of Tasmania, Hobart is located at the foot hill of the royal Mount Wellington. The city was established in 1804 by Lieutenant Governor Collins as a penal colony for British and Irish convict named as Hobart Town or Horborton after Lord Hobart. The area was originally inhabited by the semi-nomadic Mouheneener tribe; aggressive confrontation with the European settlers and diseases destroyed the aboriginal population completely and this population was quickly replaced by other free settlers and the convict population. Its situation on the Derwent River has made Hobart a completely safe deepwater harbor.
