Government Wants Faster Wi-fi At Airports

Taking trips via cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages is often what makes such trips all the sweeter, but trying to access painfully slow Wi-Fi at select airports at busy times of the days can be frustrating.

The good news is that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced at the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas that the agency is planning to release up to 195 megahertz of spectrum in the 5 gigahertz band because of concern with high traffic congestion continuing to rise and its impact on wireless networks.

This will be the largest block of unlicensed spectrum to be made available for the expansion of Wi-Fi since 2003, according to the FCC.

As this spectrum comes on line, it is expected to relieved congested Wi-Fi networks at major hubs such as airports and convention centers. This move is expected to improve the speed and capacity of Wi-Fi service.

This expansion will commence in February. The agency hopes that its new initiative will result in speed increases of up to 35 percent.
