While conducting a conference, the presenter would typically like to know if his or her audience is paying attention to what is being said. After delivering a presentation the presenter would like to know what the participants know, feel, think about the issues discussed. An easy way of doing this is by using the audience response system. The presenter can pose questions to the audience at any point of presentation to better understand how much of his explaining has filtered down to the participants.

In case there is a gap between the knowledge imparted and the knowledge acquired, the instructor can take suitable measures to rectify the problem. He may come to know through the audience response system what are the specific areas where additional explaining needs to be provided to the participants. This way, the trainer can amend the agenda of the presentation or the seminar to ensure that the content is of benefit to the audience. This system has proved to be of great use ...
... in many situations and many events where large groups of people are involved in an interactive knowledge sharing activity.

Modern Audience Response Systems achieve these goals by leveraging cloud computing technologies. In this way, web-based Audience Response System services are truly global and continuously available as long as Internet access is ensured. Not relying on locally installed software does not reduce these Audience Response Systems’ sophistication as they often employ JavaScript technologies to create a highly flexible and intuitive user experience. A web-based Audience Response System is typically available for use with any web browser using practically any device, whether it is a desktop computer, laptop or any mobile device such as iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets, or BlackBerry devices.

A web-based Audience Response System has usually two interfaces: a user interface and a respondent interface. The user interface requires a web browser and allows a user to create and run audience interaction sessions. To use the interface a user has to be registered. A registered user has access to functions offered by the user interface. The audience provides responses via the respondent interface. This interface typically works on a wide range of web-enabled mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets including iPhones, iPads, Android and BlackBerry devices, as well as desktop computers.

A web-based Audience Response System has typically a wide set of features, which can be offered for free or attract some subscription fees. Some support an unlimited audience size and users are often free to run multiple sessions with their audience concurrently. Questions in the Audience Response System often can be published with rich text formatting and embedded images. Results can be displayed on screen as tables and various types of bar and pie charts. Some audience response systems even allow the results to be downloaded into spreadsheet software for further analysis.
