The railway in India is under the Railway Ministry and has its headquarters in New Delhi. It is a full-fledged establishment connecting various states of the country, and millions of people depend on it for their travel and livelihood.

There are long-distance trains that are fast and have few halts, as well as short-distance suburban trains. The suburban trains are slow and have stoppages at every station. They are found in most of the major cities in India like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune, and have contributed largely in decreasing the traffic jam on roads. You can buy season tickets in suburban trains.

The trains in India run on four gauges and they are broad, standard, meter and narrow gauges. The broad gauge is most widely used across the country. In regions of less traffic meter gauge is used. The narrow gauge is usually used in hilly areas and by private railways.
Various classes of travel are found in Indian Railways like AC First Class, AC two-tier, AC three-tier, First Class, Executive Class, Chair Cars, Second Class, Second Sleeper Class, etc. The First ...
... Class and AC Class coaches are more spacious, comfortable and the seats are wider than those in the Second Class coaches. The prices of tickets on different classes vary depending on the comforts and facilities offered.

Senior citizens traveling in trains get concessions on their tickets. Male passengers who are 60 years and above and female passengers who are 58 years and above get a concession of 40% and 50% respectively on their tickets. This is available on all classes and it is provided even when they book tickets online.

The railway runs several luxury trains to promote tourism in India like Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey, and Royal Orient Express. These trains mainly attract foreign tourists. For domestic tourists, there are trains to tourist and pilgrimage centers. IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, arranges several luxury and budget tour packages for the people. This has greatly helped in increasing tourism in India.
At the end of the train is the Guard’s cabin, where the guard stays. It is fitted with a transceiver. The train leaves the station only after the guard gives the all-clear signal. Every compartment in the train has a chain which can be pulled in case of emergency to activate the train’s emergency brakes and stop the train. If you are in any trouble and want to stop the train, you can pull the chain. The guard and the security officer will reach you in no time.

The railway Budget presented every year by the Minister of Railways contains all plans, reforms and changes that will be implemented in Indian Railways for the coming year for the benefit of people.
