Gin is perhaps one of the most beloved of liquors; taken either straight, with tonic or in a martini, this juniper berry and herbal infused beverage is crisp, refreshing, and flavorful. Here’s our list of the top ten gin brands you should try if you’re interested in expanding your palate.

10. Gordon’s

First developed in 1769, Gordon’s Special London Dry Gin has been made with the exact same recipe for almost 250 years. Triple distilled with a secret ingredient that is only known to a dozen people, Gordon’s is the main ingredient in the Vesper Cocktail, the drink made famous by James Bond.

9. Star Dry Gin

This Scandinavian gin is a little bit “heavy”, making it perfect for cocktails and cold-weather situations. It also features a good hint of coriander along with ...
... citrus and juniper notes.

8. Beefeater Gin

The gin that’s ubiquitous no matter where you are in the world, Beefeater Gin is smooth and versatile, which is why top bartenders prefer it when making Gin & Tonics.

7. Bombay Sapphire

Produced by a triple distillation process, Bombay Sapphire is delicately floral and aromatic due to its infusion process; only the vapors of the herbal ingredients are used. This is a light and airy gin.

6. Portobello Road

This complex and very fine gin is crafted at the Portobello Star Pub in Notting Hill, which also happens to be London’s smallest copper pot distiller.

5. Tanqueray

In production since 1830, Tanqueray is the gin of connoisseurs. Interestingly, while many on this list are triple distilled, Tanqueray is only double-distilled and consists of four ingredients.

4. Broker’s Gin

One of the newer London Gins on the market, Broker’s originated in 1998. It is quadrupled distilled and infused with ten different botanicals; after this process it is distilled a fifth time. Its robust herbal character is the result of distillation in traditional pot stills.

3. Plymouth Gin

Plymouth Gin can only legally be made in Plymouth; it contains seven botanical ingredients. Plymouth Gin has the honor of being the first gin to be specified by name in one of the earliest books dedicated to the art of cocktails; in fact in recent times, many recipes are based specifically on Plymouth Gin. In other words, if you don’t have any, don’t make that cocktail with another gin because it just won’t be the same.

2. Hendricks

Featuring an aroma of rose petals and cucumber, this 13-year-old gin comes in a bottle that isn’t exactly easy to use. However, because it tastes “sublime” according to aficionados, it’s a detail that is always overlooked.

And the number one gin brand on our list is....

Tanqueray No. 10

Although we’ve already mentioned Tanqueray on our list, we must mention that this offering by the same company simply takes gin to another level. This crisp gin produces a delightful warmth due to its underlying pepperiness and gentle hint of coriander. Out of all the gins on the market, this is the one you simply must try; you won’t regret it.
