Just as there are a great many different types of guns, there are correspondingly many different types of airsoft guns and airsoft rifles. This is because airsoft guns are modeled on real guns. Airsoft guns can also be divided along the lines of the mechanisms that they operate on, and there are three main categories – spring, electric and gas. The guns in each of these three categories all have their own advantages and disadvantages, and while no one category is better than the other, there are circumstances where one category is more suitable than the others.

Spring

Spring airsoft guns are generally considered to be the most basic type of airsoft guns. As compared to the other two categories, spring-operated guns can be considered the simplest mechanically, making them easier and cheaper to manufacture. The greatest limitation of this type of gun is that they are single-shot, meaning that each shot requires that the user cock the gun once. This means that the rate of fire of spring guns is much slower than either gas or electric guns.

These guns are particularly suitable for those new to the sport of ...
... airsoft, as they are simple to operate and maintain. Given that maintenance accounts for a significant proportion of the time users spend on the sport, this is definitely good news for beginners. Parents who want to teach their children to respect real guns, or who simply want to get their kids started on airsoft should definitely start them off with spring guns. Another advantage of spring guns is that reloading simply requires that you cock the spring, whereas with gas and electric guns you can run out of either gas or electricity, potentially leaving you high and dry on the playing field.

Gas

Gas guns make use of compressed carbon dioxide (CO2) to propel BBs from the gun, and this is stored in the form of canisters. The canisters, in turn, are filled from a larger tank of CO2, or can be purchased filled. The greatest advantage of gas guns is that the compressed CO2 gives these guns a great deal of power. The most powerful airsoft guns on the market are gas-powered, and some of these guns are powerful enough to kill small animals.

Electric

Electric airsoft guns feature the highest rate of fire in the airsoft world, and they also have the largest magazines capacities, allowing you to fire a much larger number of BBs before having to reload. The downside to electric guns is that they run on rechargeable batteries, and once the power in the battery has been exhausted, they usually have to be charged overnight before they are ready for use again.

Choosing One

If you are trying to choose from one of the categories of airsoft guns and airsoft rifles, then you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each category. Are you beginner who is just getting started in the sport? Or perhaps you are an experienced airsoft user looking for a more powerful gun. These considerations should ultimately determine which category you choose.
