Is Designer Furniture Always The Way To Go When Revamping A House’s Interior?

There are a lot of different elements to consider when you start making changes – ideally you’ll want to keep as much as possible but this may not fit in with your plans so, if you have to rip up the carpet and tear down the wallpaper, then do it. If you’re starting from scratch, these are the two biggest jobs to pin down and everything else in the room will have to fit around them. Therefore, it’s important for you to decide on the style of the room before doing anything to it – once you know what you want stylistically, you can start thinking about ideas.

If you fancy a country house theme, for instance, there’s no point buying a nice cream carpet and expensive wallpaper when wooden floorboards, plainly-painted walls and a few rugs and artefacts thrown about and hung up would look much better.

Another key component of any room is its furniture – whether it’s a bed, sofas in the living room, a desk in the study or a kitchen table, the style it takes will help to determine the style of the room. There is an increasing desire for designer furniture among middle-class families, and this furniture ...
... is usually more suitable for those going for an ultra-modern and unusual look rather than a traditional one.

There are chairs that have squiggle bases (they have to be seen to be believed) instead of four legs, Union-Jack stained leather sofas with low backs that look like they belong in a record company’s waiting room and dining tables that look more like carpenters’ workstations – if that’s the kind of thing you like then you can buy almost any piece, with the only potential problems coming in the form of colour clashes. These pieces often work best when they mesh and collide with each other.

In addition, contemporary office furniture is highly sought-after – if you’re a fan of glass and polished wood and metal rather than a more rustic feel then you are more than catered for. Television programmes like Mad Men have also highlighted office style and design in terms of 1960s nostalgia, and there is now a great deal of demand for the kinds of furniture and decoration used at that time from professionals who want to emulate Don Draper and Roger Sterling.

In truth, there are hundreds of styles to choose from and the rules are only rules if you choose to follow them. You have the freedom to do whatever you want with your house, whether you want it to be a professional’s modern paradise or a cosy family home. All you really need to do is ensure that you don’t end up spending more money on it than you can afford or, worse, running out of money halfway through and leaving an unfinished house for years until someone applies on your behalf to DIY SOS – as long as you plan responsibly in terms of budget, you’ll be fine.
