Effective Employee Recognition With Crystal Awards And Trophies

When a business engages in employee recognition, it has a far more serious function than just being a “nice thing to do.” In fact, it's a tool that reinforces the behavior or activity that leads to the positive outcome the businesses desires, and it rewards the people directly for contributing to that outcome. For example, when a certain sales threshold is reached, the sales person might receive a nicely engraved crystal award or trophy, you draw attention to the mileposts you want to see other employees reach. It's a very powerful reinforcement tool and very simple to implement.

When you decide the way in which you will engage in employee recognition so that it's good for the business and the employee, you want it to be viewed as a positive program, one that motivates employees and rewards them for work that is vital to the overall health of the business. In short, you want to convey that your employees are vital to the success of the business and that their efforts have not gone unnoticed and are appreciated. The crystal award and trophy is merely a physical representation of a much larger concept.

Here are some tips for instituting an effective employee program.

Employers must set clear criteria for just exactly what behavior, performance, or milestone is worthy of rewarding.
Do not exclude any employees from eligibility for the reward. If one employee is eligible for crystal awards and trophies, then all employees are eligible.
The written recognition program must spell out in detail for both management and employees exactly what will be recognized and rewarded.
Any employee who fulfills the recognition for an award, whether it's the crystal award or a trophy, must receive it.
Don't wait too long before giving the reward. Give it as soon after the work or criteria was met as possible to create a direct association with the rewarded behavior or achievement to further reinforcement the connection between the two.

Remember too not to create a recognition program where managers “choose” who will get the award. Employees will view the choice as favoritism. For this reason, programs such as “Employee of the Month,” unless it's based on actual data, seldom are effective.
