Useful Information On Motorcycle Batteries
Earlier generation motorcycles mainly used batteries for lighting and for the horn. Today, motorcycles rely on batteries to drive the starting motor. Battery capacity can range from 6V 4 AH to 12 V 20AH. High performance, high engine capacity motorcycles typically use larger batteries. There is a fixed slot for the motorcycle battery. The motorcycle battery may be a flooded type or a sealed, maintenance-free type or even a gel dry battery can be substituted if it fits in place. The larger batteries can provide a shorting current of around 1200 Amps and a cranking current of around 250 to 400 Amps. Motorcycle batteries are usually fitted with the standard auto SAE terminals.
Types of Motorcycle batteries
• Flooded lead acid type.
• VRLA, maintenance free, sealed batteries.
• Gel batteries, totally sealed, maintenance free, can be mounted in any orientation.
• High performance batteries using ultra high purity lead plates, AGM, welded electrodes and sealed constructions for ruggedized performance.
• Special purpose, lithium ion lightweight, yet highly powerful motorcycle batteries ...
... where weight is a consideration and a small form factor is required.
• BOSCH silver alloy lead plate motorcycle batteries for enhanced performance and extended life.
• Starved electrolyte AGM VRLA type motorcycle battery, made by Exide. This type of battery is ideal for deep cycling operations, usually encountered in electric scooters and bikes.
The desirable features of a motorcycle battery are low maintenance, protection against spillage, high power to weight ratio, charge acceptance, rugged and vibration resistant construction and flame-proof technology. Advanced manufacturers like Exide offer motorcycle batteries specifically designed for use in motorcycles and electric bikes.
Care of Motorcycle batteries
If your motorcycle uses a flooded lead acid battery, you need to follow the same maintenance procedure as you would for a similar car battery. Check electrolyte level and top it up. Have the electrolyte checked for pH at regular intervals. Keep terminals of motorcycle batteriesfree of rust and corrosion and use petroleum jelly to protect wires and terminal bolts. Secure the battery firmly to prevent it bouncing about. Do not leave a battery unused; charge it and discharge it at regular intervals even if you winter your motorcycle.
Use special high performance batteries or lithium ion batteries if you can afford them for care-free use and extended life. If your motorcycle came with a standard flooded lead acid battery, you can obtain an equivalent gel type, fully sealed type, high performance type or even lithium ion type in the same size to fit into the battery slot, when it is time for replacement. Get it from an online battery supplier for the best deal.
