Curtains play a vital role in enhancing the overall decor of your home. They not only alleviate the look of a simple room, but provide comfort as well. However, it gets difficult to choose the right kind of fabric for your curtains. A wide variety of fabrics are available in the market today, but go for the one that best matches your style, needs and preferences.

At times it may be difficult to finds curtains which will perfectly match to the interior decor of the house and at the same time be of the right size. Creating curtains of your own will solve this problem because then you will have an opportunity to choose both the design of curtains you make and the kind of fabric you use with regard to color, weight, durability and length.

Cotton fabrics are excellent as curtains particularly in homes with a country style interior decor. Cotton fabrics are generally lighter than ancient drapery fabrics and heavier than all sheer fabrics. Cotton curtains can hang either on their own or at the front of sheers. Cotton is considered as one of the best fabrics for curtains mainly because cotton curtains are washable, unlike ...
... most drapery fabrics which can only be dry cleaned. Cotton curtains are durable and will therefore last for long especially if they have a lining which protects them from fading as a result of prolonged exposure to the sun. Cottons works well as valances, cafe curtains and full length panels.

Lace is a perfect choice for simple but beautiful curtains. As a fabric lace is very flexible in terms of use because it can be used as a cafe curtain, background sheer , country style or long panel curtains. Making curtains out of lace fabric is quite simple. Because of how lace is manufactured, its sides do not often require hemming to secure them. All that is needed is addition of a casing/ sheath at the upper part and hemming at the bottom.

Sheer fabrics include such fabrics as chiffon, batiste, tulle and voile. Voile is a light weight, see-through fabric made of cotton material; tulle is a light weight, delicate net fabric made of rayon, nylon, silk or cotton; batiste is a delicate plain woven fabric made of cotton and chiffon is a light weight elegant sheer fabric for curtains which is very popular. Currently most sheer fabrics are made of silk and cotton although there are a few rayon and nylon sheer fabrics. Sheer fabrics make nice light weight curtains especially for summer months and they look nice when they are hung with heavy draperies that are to be left open. Sheers that are hung behind heavier draperies allow light to enter the house while providing some privacy.

Drapery fabrics are generally heavier than sheer and cotton fabrics. They are made from a wide range of fabrics including cotton, rayon, acetate, polyester, linen and silk. Silk, linen/ linen blends and cotton are the best fabrics for stationary panels or draw draperies on both sides of the window, but polyester or cotton voile create elegant under drapes for an additional layer of beauty and texture on the window. Although sheer drapery fabric does not provide privacy at night they offer adequate privacy during the day thus allowing draperies to be opened. Most draperies work in harmony with similar upholstery fabrics to make the room look attractive. Majority of drapery fabrics are made by interior home designers and can be used on any curtain including valances and long drapery panels.
