Pain management jobs for medical doctors are usually considered a subspecialty in the field of anesthesiology. However, some pain management physicians come from other backgrounds as well. For example, a pain management doctor may have originally trained in primary care or in physiatry.

Many of the Pain Management Jobs currently available are in outpatient clinics. Some of these clinics are associated with a hospital but others are private clinics that specialize in pain management. Typically, pain management doctors working in a clinic setting see approximately twenty-five patients a day. Some jobs in pain management are found in a surgery or post-surgery setting but the number are much fewer than those available in outpatient clinics.

Physicians working in pain management jobs are involved in helping patients manage their chronic pain. This pain may be due to an injury or it may be due to the effects of an illness. This is a very important job as debilitating pain can affect every aspect of a patient's life. Chronic pain can lead to not being able to perform on job and it can affect the patient's relationship ...
... with their family and friends. If chronic pain goes unmanaged, it can lead to severe depression.

There are a variety of methods a doctor may use to help a patient manage their pain. There are oral pharmaceuticals that can help but there are also a number of other methods. These methods include various forms of physical therapy, chiropractic sessions, massage therapy in a clinical setting, teaching the patient how to self-massage, bio-feedback, meditation, yoga, acupuncture, and psychiatric sessions. Physicians working in Pain Management Jobs often prescribe several different methods of managing pain for the patient to try and then they monitor the progress of each and develop a long term plan based on the results. Not all of the pain management services these physicians prescribe are done onsite. However, the pain management physician is still able to oversee the progress by getting reports back. In fact, this is often done electronically these days and this can include images and videos.

The Medical Group Management Associate (MGMA) puts out a physician salary survey each year. In 2011, they showed a marked difference in the salary that physicians working in pain management received depending on whether or not they were anesthesiologists. Anesthesiologists working in pain management received an average of just over $502,000. However, other physicians working in pain management received an average of about $371,000. The difference in salary is significant but they are understandable due to the additional procedures anesthesiologists can perform. For example, anesthesiologists can do epidurals whereas other physicians cannot perform these.

Physicians working in Pain Management Jobs report a great deal of job satisfaction. It can be quite rewarding to help patients lead a more productive and enjoyable life because their chronic pain is subdued. Some anesthesiologists prefer the atmosphere of working in a pain management clinic over the more intense surgery environment where the hours are long and often unpredictable. Also, anesthesiologists working in clinics do not have to be on emergency call.

There are also pain management jobs available for nurses, physician assistants, and medical assistants. In fact, someone in these fields may choose to specialize in this sub-field. Whether a physician, a nurse, a physician assistant, or a medical assistant, the field of pain management is increasing rapidly. Therefore, job stability in this sub-field would be rated as excellent.
