Madrid Moods: Go With Your Holiday Whims
So you're in Madrid but you want to return with a bagful of unique memories, far from the tourist traps and the banal guided trips. Here are some great suggestions!
El Rastro: If you're looking for local color, there's no better place than this lively, bustling flea market open only on Sundays and public holidays, from 9am to 3pm. Located off the Ronda de Toledo metro station, the market has a tradition that dates back to the 15th century. The nearly 4000 stalls offer a mind-boggling variety of wares and you may even pick up a bargain antique! There are some great street-food options here, with all kinds of ethnic cuisines from all over the world. The market is across several streets and each one has its own special items.
Real Madrid Museum: This is the Mecca of football fans – the place where you can browse through mementos, photos, videos and news items regarding the Real Madrid's triumphs and trials, victories and history. The club's history is closely linked with the everyday life of Madrid's citizens. You can also buy souvenirs and gifts to take back home or tickets to a match if it's scheduled.
Shoe ...
... Shopping: If you have a footwear addiction, Madrid is the place to indulge! In the Chueca district, strolling down the Augusto Figueroa street, window-shopping and even hunting for bargains is a great way to spend a day.
Indulge your sweet tooth: If you haven't heard about montecados, this is the time to develop the habit! These delicious, flavorsome, little biscuits are made of almond flour, spices and lots of butter and sugar. They're freshly made daily by the nuns at the Convento de las Carboneras and sold at a quaint grilled outlet in the convent. Cakes, pastries and other yummy baked goods are the specialty of the 19th century bakery, Antigua Pasterelia. Madrid is also full of little shops selling sweets and desserts that reveal Spain's diverse historical and cultural influences.
Amusement parks: While traveling with family, keep your kids entertained, otherwise you'll have a mutiny on your hands! Madrid and its neighborhood are filled with small and large amusement parks and theme parks, with all kinds of rides, water-sports, cycling, roller-coasters, bumpy cars etc. and lots of food courts for when you want a bite to eat. The Casa de Campo is a great choice as it has the Madrid Zoo in its compound.
Art: Apart from the magnificent Prado Museum, Madrid has a host of smaller art galleries and collections of contemporary art. The Caixa Forum and La Casa Encendida among others host great modern art collections, while the Thyssen and the Reina Sofia host traditional shows as well.
There's plenty to do in Madrid, the City of the Strawberry Tree!
