If you are going to visit Canada on a brief vacation, in all likelihood your trip will be a whirlwind of activities. You will probably not have the chance to learn about Canadian culture because you will spend most of your time traveling from one tourist spot to another. If you truly want to immerse yourself in the culture of Canada, stay for several months and live amongst the locals. For those considering a longer stay in Canada, here is a list of things to prepare and other important matters that you should learn about:

1.Health Insurance

As a visitor in a foreign country, you need insurance more than ever. Health and hospital insurance in particular is very important since you never know when you will get sick and need medical assistance. That is why Super Visa insurance is required for Super Visa applicants and health insurance is a major requirement for temporary resident visa applications.

2.Visa and/or Passport

It can be an inconvenience if you have to renew your passport or get your visa extended while you are in Canada. You can avoid the ...
... trouble of going to a visa office and submitting an application for an extension if you make sure beforehand that your travel papers are valid for at least the next six months.

3.Bank Account and Cash

If you are staying for a more than a month, money is going to be an important matter. You may not be able to easily access your funds unless you have opened a Canadian bank account and linked it to your main account back home. You also need to have enough cash to spend on impromptu purchases like food, transportation, and so forth.

4.Lodgings

Staying in a hotel for a brief stay is logical, but staying in one for more than two weeks is impractical. There are furnished cottage and apartment rentals that offer month-long rates to tourists. You can save money by renting this kind of lodging, plus enjoy the full comforts of a house. This is often preferable to staying in an expensive hotel and with a single room, small bathroom and no kitchen.

5.Food

There is another reason why renting a cottage or house would be a good option if you are planning a longer stay in Canada: you can cook and prepare your own food. Keep in mind that the cost of food is one the largest expenses you will have while traveling abroad. You can save money if you buy your own ingredients and cook some of your meals at home.

6.Canadian Lingo

Be sure to familiarize yourself with how Canadians refer to certain things. For example, a winter hat is known as a ‘took’, and land owned by the government is called ‘crown land’. One-dollar coins are loonies, two-dollar coins are toonies, the metric system is used for certain things such as highway distances and selling gasoline whereas the imperial system is used for other purposes such as the height and weight of people. Degrees Celsius (oC = oF – 32 / 1.8) are used officially for temperatures but many older people still use degrees Fahrenheit.
