Lap Band Surgery is a weight loss procedure for those who aim to significantly reduce their weight for optimal health. With close to 60% of the Canadian population considered overweight or obese, physicians and researchers alike are concerned because excess weight leads directly to many chronic illnesses.

The appeal of Weight Loss Surgery is growing as more and more doctors see what positive effects it can have, especially on clients who had given up on the idea that they could attain a healthy weight. The goal of Lap-Band surgery is to achieve and maintain a weight loss of 60%-80% of excess body weight. The majority of patients who have the procedure will achieve significant, sustained weight loss. Studies have shown that any significant degree of sustained weight loss is of benefit to obesity-related health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep ...
... apnea, high cholesterol and arthritis.

Lap-Band surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which a band is inserted around the upper portion of the stomach. The change to the shape of the stomach controls the amount of food that can be ingested at one time, allowing patients to feel satisfied, but having consumed much less food.

During this type of weight loss surgery, a video camera is attached to a telescope so that surgeons can see within the abdominal cavity while the patient is under general anesthesia. Gas is used to provide the space needed for a Lap-Band to be placed around the upper stomach. An adjustment port is connected by tubing to the Lap-Band which allows doctors to adjust the tightness of the band, thus controlling the size of the opening between the upper and lower stomach.

Studies confirm that those who are successful in losing weight through weight loss surgery are likely to reduce their chance of experiencing an obesity-related illness by more than 50%.
