Stella portrayed as a hard and determined matriarch of the estate is played by a vivacious Elizabeth Ashley. She makes her presence ...
... felt when she declares aloud, Don't talk to me about difficult times. We got through the Depression, when people were abandoning their land, selling it all over the county, but my father held on to our land, scraped together the money to plant cotton every year, pay out taxes and keep body and soul together. But unfortunately these thoughts are not shared by the present generation, personified by Mary Jo, Stella's daughter, played to flawlessness by Hallie Foote. She is excellent while making the woman's greediness likable and hilariously funny. She is permanently fearful of being cheated out of her inheritance. Mary Jo's brother Lewis (Gerald McRaney) has a serious drinking problem and he is having an affair with a young woman who works at the local fast-food joint called Whataburger.

Stella's large estate is managed by her other daughter Lucille and her son ‘Son' (Devon Abner). The plot gets juicer with disclosures of drinking and gambling problems and trouble with the longtime housemaid. The show gets all heated up with Stella's passing.
