Pneumatic equipment has long been used in many industries in the country, and it even has many household applications that most people simply never notice. Many people take the efficiency power provided by pneumatics for granted, unaware of the technology that is powering some of their most familiar machines. There are a great many different pneumatic components being used for a variety of functions, such as pneumatic nail guns, pneumatic grippers and jackhammers, to name but a few of many.

Different Gases

Just as mechanically driven machinery may use different motors or different gears to perform their work, pneumatic equipment uses different types of gases depending on the type of machine and work that needs to be done. At its most basic, pneumatic equipment uses air to perform its work, as air is the most readily available gas that can be used. This is the case with most fixed installations that make use of pneumatic technology, because the compressors can constantly draw from the supply of air around them and compress it to drive the machinery and equipment.

For handheld equipment that depends on a limited ...
... supply of compressed gas, however, other gases are used because they are more efficient than air. Meaning that a larger volume of these gases can be compressed into the same space, allowing for a greater amount of work done without having to increase storage capacity. This is particularly important for tools and equipment that has a limited size and must remain portable. Thus the gases nitrogen and carbon dioxide are used for applications that require pre-compressing as much gas as possible into a small container.

Providing Power

The most readily available pneumatic component can be bought in large quantity at most hardware stores, and these are compressed gas canisters. Some contain compressed air, while others contain compressed nitrogen or carbon dioxide. These canisters allow small hand-held tools to be operated, and a favorite use of compressed carbon dioxide canisters is in the popular sport of paintball. The compressed gas is used as a propellant to launch pellets filled with paint towards a target.

When it comes to home tools such pneumatic drills and hammers, however, the supply of compressed air must be constant in order for any significant amount of work to be done. Instead of having canisters of gas that has already been compressed, these types of machinery work with the help of an air compressor. The air compressor takes in the surrounding air and uses mechanical force to compress it, sending the compressed air through tubing to the tool itself, thus driving the mechanism of the tool and allowing work to be done.

Care & Maintenance

Pneumatic components form vital parts of any system that they are used in, controlling the provision of power and performing other important functions. It is therefore essential that you ensure proper care and maintenance of these components. No matter how large or small the pneumatic equipment you use is, whether it is an entire fixed factory installation or a set of pneumatic grippers, proper care is simply indispensable.
