Who hasn't tasted a fruitcake? They are visible at every checkout counter at every store, and are prominently featured in every holiday gift catalog. The requisite fruitcake is tucked in the corner of every holiday dessert buffet and makes an appearance at every holiday office party. It is impossible to pass the holidays without giving or receiving this Christmas staple. But what makes the hearty sweet cake so popular?

The history of the fruitcake dates back to medieval times when sweet breads were first developed. Cooks all over the Old World saved their most expensive ingredients, then baked them together for a special holiday treat. The basic ingredients include the finest wheat flour, white sugar, eggs, sweet butter, and exotic dried fruits. But variations of the bread might include rich filling such as marzipan (almond paste).

Fruitcake may be the number one re-gifted item; there are rumors that the first one ever made is still being passed along. While there is a stigma that is associated with fruitcake, if you are someone who secretly enjoys this holiday treat, some nutritional information is provided below.

Even ...
... though the name implies a healthy dessert or snack, fruitcake has little nutritional value; however it does have some redeeming features that give it salvation. Despite the fact that fruitcake is made with sugar, butter and flour, a typical serving size has only about 200 calories. This number can vary based on size of the slice, and number of ingredients that are added to the batter. While the fruit in the cake is candied fruit that is loaded with sugar, fruitcake often has a variety of nuts such as walnuts, pecans and almonds. These nuts are a great source of protein which helps promote a feeling of satiety. Nuts are only one source of protein that dieters use. Other popular protein sources include whey protein shakes and eggs, (eggs are also an ingredient in fruitcake.) However, now with the advent of innovative recipes, eggless fruitcake is also served. It is as tasty as it looks. There are many substitutes of eggs which are used to make a pure veg fruitcake, making the cake as soft, fluffy and tasty as the regular one.

Some fruitcake also has some fiber in it. This can be found from ingredients such as dates and figs. Again, this is not the optimal sources for protein and fiber, but a little is better than nothing at all. What sets apart the good fruitcake from the bad is how dry or moist it is. Usually, fruitcake is best enjoyed when it is cold or frozen. Sometimes, people opt to keep it for several days to let the flavor sink in. It is also typically wrapped in foil and is perfect for parties and gatherings during the holidays. There are so many things that you can serve on the Christmas table during the holidays, and fruitcake should always be one of them! This special treat is something that you and your loved ones will surely enjoy. Having a slice will really help get you in the spirit of the holiday season. Aside from that, you can also opt to give out fruitcake to your family and friends as gifts!
