Physiatry jobs are open to physicians who are doctors of osteopathy (D.O.) and who are also certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as a specialist in the field of physical and rehabilitation medicine. The training necessary for physiatry jobs includes four years of medical school plus four years of residency. Fellowships in a rehabilitation subspeciality can also help secure a job in this field. During training, physiatrist are trained in how to determine the actual underlying cause for the various symptoms of pain. These include problems with ligaments, bones, muscles, and nerves, although superficially the symptoms may appear the same. It takes a real expert to know for sure what is causing the pain.

The physical impairments that patients deal with due to diseases like arthritis, chronic back pain, and fibromyalgia can become so debilitating that the patient can't even perform simple tasks such as grocery shopping, cooking, and self-grooming.
