Importance Of Work Holding Fixtures In The Manufacturing Units

In our world we facilitate ourselves with many a mechanically engineered device. Think about those escalators in the mall, the plane you have planned to board this Sunday or your building’s elevator, details may not matter to you but all these machines have come through many mechanical processes. Manufacturing industries with latest inventions has made significant progress and have made our lives convenient. Modern manufacturing processes are therefore in constant demand of high-performance cutting tools, new machine tools to enable the assembling faster and in better versions as compared to earlier.
Although the basic principles are the same but mechanical methods as work holding has become advanced. The method involves work holding fixtures to locate, support and hold the work piece during machining. These fixtures changed the whole scenario of machining especially the standardized ones. Earlier the manufacturing artisans used to go piece by piece for a complete machine to assemble finally. This used to consume a lot of time of production of such machines. With standardized fixtures a revolutionary change occurred ...
... in mass production. These standards became the very much base of today’s jigs and fixtures.
Identified by their basic construction jigs are in two common forms namely open and closed. Plate jigs, Template jigs, sandwich jigs, table jigs, and angle plate jigs are the most-common open jigs. Channel jigs, Box jigs, and leaf jigs are typical examples of closed jigs. Specialized types as drill jigs are mostly used in specialized industries.
A fixture on the other hand maintains the position of a tool to a work piece defining the precise relationship. These work holders are identified as a machine tool and are readily used for any operation.
The following applications are predominant:
1. Flat surface machining: this involves types of fixtures as:
• Milling fixtures
• Planing fixtures
• Shaping fixtures
2. Cylindrical surface machining: Involves lathe fixtures.
3. Irregular surface machining: involves band sawing fixtures.
4. Non machining applications involve assembling with welding or soldering types. Inspection with electrical or optical types. Finishing with painting, plating, polishing types. Others include layout, heat treating and template fixtures.
Each fixture further has an assembly of tools and base involved in the required functioning. For instance machining application types as miller’s fixtures need to have a solid base as t slot floor plate. This plate provides complete built up of fixture making it ready for setting blocks that further goes for locating and clamping required for milling.
These all tools and work holders are the little mechanical hands for manufacturers to bring the right shape of machines. Therefore a high quality work holder becomes an important factor.
