Dr. Christie Macdonald Offers Tips On Dealing With Holiday Stress

The holidays are a very busy time of year. There are a lot of demands on our time, with shopping, baking, cleaning, and entertaining. This can leave us feeling very overwhelmed and stressed, not the way we would like to enjoy the holiday season. Stress can lead to a variety of health problems, including back pain. There are a few things you can do to help alleviate the stress and make this holiday season a joyous time of year.
An excellent way to help reduce the stress is to not abandon health habits during this busy time. Over indulgence can lead to guilt that can lead to stress. Often when we are feeling overwhelmed we tend to drop our exercise routine, get less sleep, and stop taking care of ourselves. We cancel our chiropractor, massage, acupuncture etc. appointments, thinking that our time could be better used baking, shopping or with one of the many other holiday activities. However, this is the time that we can benefit most from all of those appointments.

Stress can lead to sleepless nights, along with social engagements, wrapping presents, assembling toys all going late into the evenings, the hours we spend sleeping are greatly reduced. Lack of sleep can greatly reduce our concentration, energy levels, immunity, and quality of mood. Be sure to try and go to sleep at approximately the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. Remember that it is okay to say no. Your friends and family understand that you cannot take on every project or go to every party. Enjoy the ones you can, rather than trying to do everything and not enjoying anything.
Keeping up with your exercise routine can help reduce not only your stress, but waistlines and back pain. Exercise can help keep the mind clear and calm. It helps release endorphins, the brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters, this is sometimes called the “runner’s high”, but can occur from any exercise.During an intense work out, our brains are focused on the work out itself and often you will find that you have forgotten the day’s irritations. Regular exercise can also improve your sleep and give you a sense of command over your body and your life.
Don’t forget to take time for yourself.Even fifteen minutes a day can help you refresh and recharge.
