Yet another growing problem in today’s time among the population is Obesity caused due to infertility. Weight problem cases are on increase everywhere, and so are infertility clinics. Almost 10% of couples in the country get affected by infertility and are hesitant to take medical advice by visiting infertility clinics. The obesity rates in India have been rising at an extensive rate, out of which quarter of the women’s population is defined as medically obese. Increased infertility cases are lead by obesity caused to unhealthy lifestyle, irregular eating habits, stress.

It is said that obese women are less likely to conceive than women of normal weight. Once pregnant, obese women are more susceptible to face pregnancy complications and even give birth to still born because of a higher rate of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and stillbirths. Even if the delivery takes place, babies born to obese women are not able to survive beyond a month after their birth. It is clear that women who are obese are at an increased risk for infertility and other reproductive problems. Numerous studies states that women who are obese ...
... are more likely to have ovulation problems that result in irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles and hence infertility. Infertility treatments too at times yield no respite in obese cases. For instance, in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy rates are lower in obese women compared to those of normal rate. This shows that the obese women do not respond to any fertility medications as well and have a higher percentage of immature eggs. As compared to normal weight women, obese women are at risk for fertility treatments. Infertility clinics in India are highly advanced and are equally competent of handling all kinds of issues faced by couples.

Obesity is a significant risk factor in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Even after controlling for other factors that are known to increase the risk for adverse outcomes, the obese women seem to have a much greater likelihood of these problems.

Stillbirth was two to three times more likely to occur in the pregnancies of obese women.

Preeclampsia, a problem with elevated blood pressure in pregnancy, is four to five times more likely to occur in the pregnancies of obese women.

During labor and delivery too, there is a serious problem called shoulder dystocia which occurs in obese cases only. This happens when the shoulder of the baby gets caught in the mother’s pelvis. It is considered a medical emergency and can result in death or injury to the baby. This kind of a problem is witnessed a lot around our country across all infertility clinics as the density of obese people is constantly on a rise.

Women affected by obesity not only have infertility problems, but are also at a greater risk for pregnancy complications like having a Caesarean section, giving birth to a large baby or even developing gestational diabetes. Therefore women who do not immediately seek an aid for their obesity by radically changing their diet and exercise programs before becoming pregnant are even at a greater risk of pregnancy loss (miscarriage). This is why it is bet advised to consult your doctor who is a specialist of fertility treatments for both genders.
