Drinking Alcohol On Vacation

Once you depart on your trip, made possible in part by the purchase of cheap travel options, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages, there is a tendency to want to lean back and enjoy alcoholic beverages to help you relax while flying.
Travelers who like alcohol should remember to drink in moderation while away from home, or not at all, to avoid medical problems.
It is particularly important not to get drunk while flying. Some passengers drink on board in hopes of helping them sleep through a flight. Many fliers are unaware that drinking at high altitude exaggerates the effects of alcohol on the body. Travelers tend to get drunker quicker when flying.
A major negative side effect of drinking to excess in the air is the added time it then takes to adjust to a new time zone. Anyone who tends to suffer from jet lag should pass on cocktails altogether. Similarly passengers suffering from a cold or upper respiratory condition should avoid alcohol when flying.
Some travelers mistakenly believe that drinking alcohol helps adjust to a new local time zone or ...
... reset a person’s internal clock. Alcohol induced sleep in fact is neither deep nor restful. Heavy drinkers on planes tend to arrive lethargic at their destinations and require an extra day to adjust to a new time zone, shortening their vacation time.
If you want to minimize jet lag you should do the following:
• Get plenty of rest before traveling
• Drink lots of water
• Get as much exposure to sunlight as possible at your destination
• Get at least four to five hours of sleep each night
Once you reach your destination you should avoid alcohol until you have adjusted to the local environment. A minimum of 24 hours should pass prior to your first drink. Remember the lower the alcohol content of your drink, the more energetic you will feel.
Avoiding alcohol is particularly important if your destination is at a high altitude. In such cases alcohol should be avoided until your body has had the time needed to acclimate to the lower levels of oxygen in the air.
