The massive increase in recent years of mobile broadband users has presented communication service providers with remarkable new challenges. They must manage huge flows in data traffic as they figure out ways of generating the revenue needed to deploy network systems that will deal with the inundation of data. At the same time, they have to ensure that prices remain affordable for consumers while maintaining expected quality of experience through high-speed internet access, strong signals and the longest handset battery lifetime possible.
The changing dynamics of the communication industry require new ideas to be put forth and new systems to be developed to meet the demands of a growing market. Mobile broadband users certainly cannot be ignored, not when they constitute the majority of internet users in places like India and Egypt, with the numbers expected to explode across regions like Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa where fixed line connectivity is not readily available.
Scalable networks have the capability to adjust themselves when required to by huge flows of data by increasing their total throughput ...
... when hardware resources are added to them. Any system or network that “scales” when the demands on it increase must not experience any decline in performance and continue to work in a capable manner.
When it relates to mobile broadband, there is a growing need for a flexible system that can scale when required to manage both data and signaling while making sure it does not fail to deliver the same quality of experience and maintains the expected high speeds as it handles significantly longer sessions and video streaming that add to network requirements.
Scaling can be done using two general methods, horizontal or vertical. Horizontal scaling involves adding more nodes to a system, such as adding a new computer to an existing network. This could lead to a cluster of hundreds of computers working together to provide an aggregate power that is able to deal with large inputs and outputs of data. Vertical scaling is where resources are added to a single node in a system, such as a processor being added to a computer to increase its speed and performance.
The reduced prices of computers, with ever increasing performance means it is more advisable to scale using hardware instead of capacity as it is easier and cheaper to add a new node to the system compared to adding resources to an existing node. Tradeoffs remain between the two systems of course, and capacity scaling cannot be completely ignored.
As mobile broadband usage becomes the way of life across the globe, and consumers become more aware of their mobility and demand increasingly complex services, communication service providers have to step up to the challenges and deliver products that are smart, flexible and cater to every need of a consumer market that is moving steadily towards a world of inter-connectivity and requires a hassle-free, efficient, flexible and smart product that is adaptable to their every whim and need.
