Dowry is defined as any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly. Money or property brought by a bride to her husband at marriage, also called Dower. Money, goods or estate that a woman brings to her husband in marriage. The dowry has a long history in Europe, South Asia, Africa and other parts of the world. Some of its basic functions are to protect the wife against ill treatment by her husband, since a dowry can be conditional gift, to help the husband discharge the responsibilities of marriage, since the dowry makes it possible for the young man to establish a household, to provide the wife with support in case of her husband’s death, and to compensate the groom’s kin for their payment of bride wealth.
In ancient times the dowry system was not like today’s, in those days groom family was giving money to bride family for their daughters, then slowly this system changed and girls family started to give gifts to boys family and these gifts converted to compulsory dowry in its present form.
Dowry is one of the most ancient practices of India. But the origin of dowry ...
... is far nobler than we imagine. Dowry was started by wealthy businessmen, kings and other influential people of the society as a means to give girls their due in the ancestral property as in those times, even till recent times, all the money and property went to the sons only. Later on it was used to provide “seed money“or property for the establishment of a new household. Till then the amount and contents of dowry were decided solely by the parents of the bride.
In India, dowry is the payment in cash / some kind of gifts to bridegroom’s family along with the bride. Generally they include cash, jewelry, electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, and other household items that helps the newly – wed setup her home. The dowry system put great financial burden on the bride’s family.
Most dowry deaths occur when the young women, unable to bear the harassment and torture, commit suicide. Most of these suicides are by hanging, poisoning or by fire. Sometimes the woman is killed by setting her on fire, this is known as “bride burning “and sometimes disguised as suicide or accident.
The character of the article point to the fact that the harassment, beating and some cases murder of woman over dowry is both common and commonly ignored or even tacitly condoned in official circles by the polices, the court and media.
Best thing to end the dowry system from the society is to start thinking positively. When we stay in our closed religion, caste and creed society we follow all that there exist in our societies, but when we come out from the closet of all these social relationship we think more like humans and see others as humans.

Gradually the society can get transformed to a dowry free marriage system. The only way is by establishing, laws that make dowries illegal, and by prosecuting those who demand or receive a dowry for allowing their daughters to marry.
If you are a bride then find a groom who does not accept dowry. If you are groom then find a bride who does not give dowry and even if the bride’s father wants to give dowry don’t accept it. Dowry is not a contribution from wife. It’s only the price to cell / buy the bride. Think about the bride’s father, he would be suffering so much just because he has given birth to a daughter. Eradicate this evil practice from India.
The solution is the problem is spreading awareness through campaigns and media, it’s a combined effort and a bit time taking. The youth have to join hands in hands and have to carry out the program. Regarding dowry system, it’s the groom’s responsibility not to accept it.
We have to change ourselves and we have to talk on these issues deeply then only we can change certain things in our country, and after that only we can say our self educated.
Charity begins at home. What you want from the country, you should begin from your own home or your own life. Each one of us is part of the country and if each tries to mend him / herself then the entire country will reform. We can change ourselves and not others.
