Essential Measuring Instruments: Micrometer And Caliper

Precision and accuracy are both essential aspects, when it comes to measuring. Micromoter is an important device which is basically used for measuring the dimension of objects, providing high accuracy and precision. On the market, there are available all sorts of micrometers, according to your needs. For example, one of the most used types of micrometer is represented by the electronic model which provides an automatic reading of that object. Another essential instrument for measuring is the caliper, which can be used for measuring the distance between two opposite sides of a product. This instrument can be found in many contexts, such as: metalworking, science, mechanical engineering, woodworking and medicine. According to their application, calipers can be categorized in the following types: divider, inside, vernier, dial, oddleg and digital. I will discuss about all these types in the following paragraph.
The inside caliper is mainly used in measuring the internal side of the object. For example, you might think of measuring a cylinder bore or a pipe. Concerning the outside caliper, this type is used for measuring ...
... the external part of the object. Next, the oddleg caliper has the points on its legs curve in the same direction, being used for setting the distance from the edge of a workpiece. Regarding the divider caliper, it is mainly used for marking out the workpieces, in a proper way. Besides this application, this caliper can be used for measuring the distance from two points on a map. The vernier caliper offers a reading of the distance with high precision. The provided measuring scale can be metric or in inch, depending on the user. It can measure internal or external dimensions and depth, as well. Concerning the dial caliper, it is considered to be superior to the previous type because it comes with a dial gauge with special increments of the scale. The digital caliper is superior to the dial caliper, as it comes with a considerable improvement-an electronic digital display.
There are three categories of micrometer, based according to their types of application: the outside micrometer, used especially for measuring shafts, blocks, wires and shafts; the inside micrometer for measuring the diameter of the specific hole and the last category-represented by the depth micrometer, used for measuring the depths of steps and slots. The basic components of micrometer are represented by the following parts: sleeve, anvil, screw, thimble, ratchet stop, lock nut, frame and spindle.
According to the applications, there are the following categories of micrometers: the universal micrometer can be used as a step micrometer, outside micrometer, depth micrometer, inside micrometer etc; the bench micrometers are instruments providing a high accuracy in inspecting that specific object; the blade micrometer is a type of micrometer allowing to measure the narrow o-ring groove; the bore micrometer is useful for measuring the inside diameters; the ball micrometer is used for measuring the pitch diameter of screw threads.
