Specifying Designer Furniture For Different Rooms In Your Home – From Lounge To Bedroom
The concepts of form and function have been touched on extensively by plenty of design writers. Suffice to say, then, that the first of the two has a weighted bearing on the designed home – in that it sets a designer interior apart from a merely functional living space.
The elements that allow the home owner to achieve this setting apart are items of designer furniture. Whether you’re talking about a bespoke sofa, a headboard or a table, anything that has been made to fit in with a specific element of someone’s personality or a particular theme in a home, is an item designed specifically to give a unique form to the function performed by the piece.
So to take a sofa as an example – in order to be a sofa, you need to be long enough to seat more than one person; you need to be upholstered in some way; and you need a back. That’s it. To be a designer sofa, though, you must have specific shapes and elements in place, which have been designed in a unified way according to a perceived scheme or motivating factor.
The motivation is really what sets designer furniture apart from run of the mill or off ...
... these shelf furnishings – and it is also what helps to specify the precise pieces of designer furniture that should be in the different rooms in your home.
An informal room, for example, cannot have formal furnishings in it. Regency style sofas, complete with decorative silk cushions, may look wonderful in a drawing room – but in a lounge or den they can become entirely inappropriate.
Not always, of course – you have to bear in mind the whole feel and point of the room before you make a final decision. Some lounges are deliberately formal, as they are designed for receiving guests. Others are deliberately informal, in which case a whole new set of furnishing themes and fabrics is called for.
The personal taste of the home owner defines his or her personality – and so elements of this taste should shine through in the designer furniture specified for any room. The best effects, though, are always achieved when the home is allowed to develop a personality of its own as well. Rather than shoehorning the whole of an owner’s personality into every room, the designer may choose to let the house itself breathe and express itself – while nodding to the personality of it owner in certain key ways.
An Art Deco sofa, for instance, may well express the personality of a home owner – or it might simply be the right type of furnishing for the ceiling height and overall age of the building in question. Adding a specific picture, or perhaps an old fashioned globe, might be a more key indicator of the owner – his or her small stamp that takes the overall decorative theme and makes it individual.
Because designing a room is not only about designer furniture – it’s about the lights; and the ornaments; and the books. Room design at its best combines all the elements into a seamless whole.
Albert Jakeman used Designer interiors and designer furniture in all thirteen of his hotel rooms to ensure that each room was of the highest quality, and was subsequently upgraded to a three star hotel the very same year.
