Infertility In Today’s Time
10-15% of couples every year are being affected by infertility. Combination of male and female factors may be the cause in few cases.
Infertility is caused due to various reasons like with the production of sperm or eggs, with the Fallopian tubes or the uterus, endometriosis, frequent miscarriage, as well as hormonal and autoimmune (antibody) disorders in both men and women. Thus, approximately 50% of the infertile couples opt for pregnancy through various technological aids such as Surrogacy, IVF etc.
Infertility in Females
There are different types of infertility in women. Even a slightest change can have affect in the female reproductive system. A good health helps in avoiding infertility risks. It has been found that women who have eating disorders, finds it difficult to conceive. The sooner one gets a diagnosis done; the better prognosis will be. The common causes of female infertility are retroverted uterus, polycystic ovarian syndrome, fibroids and endometriosis. Infertility in Males
Male infertility generally refers to the inability of a male to properly produce healthy sperm due to the various reasons such as Hormonal problems, Sperm production problems (One of the common cause affecting about 60 in 100 patients), Blockage of sperm transport: (Second most common cause affecting about 30 in 100 patients), Unknown problems. The cause of male infertility is unknown in 40% of men, and is referred as 'idiopathic infertility' or 'cause unknown.
TREATMENT
The oldest methods used to help women conceive are artificial insemination. The most common method used is intrauterine insemination or IUI. Where, this simple technique has helped many couples, in some cases, advanced methods of conception are required to help carry a pregnancy. In today’s time, there are many different ways through which infertile couples can decide to use medical solutions for their fertility problems. Surgery is one option for a certain disorder like endometriosis. Fertility drugs are used when surgery does not turn out to be a solution to the problem. These fertility drugs are used to promote ovulation or increase the production of certain hormones. The most commonly used infertility drugs are Clomiphene, gonadotropins and bromocriptine. Sometimes, no matter how much fertility medication one goes through, conception will just not occur. In such case, using a sperm, egg or embryo donor or surrogacy may be an option. “Assisted Reproductive Technologies” (ART) encompasses a variety of medical techniques that can be utilized to produce a pregnancy by bringing an egg and sperm together outside of the womb. Treatments that fall under the category of ART include In-vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Gamate Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT), and Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT). Apart from women, fertility treatments for men are available as well. Various men decide to have a vasectomy reversal in order to restore their fertility, while others choose to pursue alternatives to vasectomy reversal.
