The highly acclaimed play by David Mamet ‘Speed the Plow' opened on Broadway on October 3, 2008. The play has been brought to life by director Neil Pepe. He has beautifully crafted the scenes in this remake, much like the original which opened in 1988. It has been twenty years since this play was first showcased, yet it remained in the hearts and minds of theater goers for very long. This play is a good combination of a taut storyline with effective screenplay and characterization. The cast brings the story to life, and it is not so much about the action as it is about the dialogues in the play.

The Casting

The characters of Bobby Gould, Charlie Fox and Karen have been played by Jeremy Piven, Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss. The earlier cast consisted of Joe Mantegna, Ron Silver and Madonna, and although the two male leads performed brilliantly, Madonna was pretty unmemorable in her role as the secretary. The Storyline

The plot opens with Charlie Fox being handed a script with a big time star cast, which he gets to his friend Bobby Gould, who is a mid level producer of a movie house. They plan to make this movie with Douggie Brown, who is the current Hollywood sensation. The movie is as much discussed as is the state in Hollywood. They pay a verbal tribute to the land of insults and rage, and this is also laced with subtle hints of irony. They do not hesitate to use foul lingo and this makes the play even more entertaining. Karen, Bobby's temp secretary walks in to his office, and he hands her a book on God, death and radiation, which he wants her to read and give notes on, later that night. Bobby also makes a side bet with Charlie, that he shall end up in bed with Karen that night. He gets really impressed by Karen's review of the book, and decides to make a movie on that instead of working on Charlie's project. This really upsets Charlie, who accuses Karen of using her body to gain an entry into Hollywood. The climax scene of the play also goes down well with the narrative, and on the whole, the story appeals to the mind and the heart.
